Nebraska to get more education dollars
Sep 5th
But schools could still be in for some rough budget times ahead.
The new federal money won't fully replace the $140 million of federal funds used to fill out the state aid formula in the current year.
The governor said it is "unlikely" the state will replace either batch of federal funds.
The state is facing a projected shortfall of $751 million during the two-year budget period ending June 30, 2012.
If Nebraska does not replace the federal funds, state school aid would drop by $81 million during the 2011-12 school year and by the More >

Nebraska QB mystery gets even more ridiculous

Ten positions were filled on offense.
Quarterback read "to be announced." True gamesmanship by Bo Pelini there, but by now, I don't see the point.
Some have opined that Pelini wanted himself -- and his quarterback -- to avoid the scrutiny that would quickly follow an official announcement. But a) I'm not sure how much scrutiny could come within hours and b) Neither Pelini nor his quarterback would get a chance to read/hear it.
Maybe he's trying to create a moment, ensuring the already-reliable Nebraska fans are in their seats at kickoff to see Zac Lee, More >
W. Kentucky-Nebraska Preview
Sep 4th
Before changing conferences, Nebraska would like to leave with one more Big 12 title - and perhaps a national one as well.
Eighth-ranked Nebraska opens its final season as a member of the conference Saturday night against overmatched Western Kentucky, which will try to snap a 20-game skid in Willie Taggart’s coaching debut.
Nebraska is already off to a good start as it concludes nearly 80 straight years in the Big Eight and Big 12 prior to joining the Big Ten next July. The Cornhuskers have their highest ranking since 2003 and are expected to win the Big 12 North outright.

Nebraska Gets $59 Million in Education Money
Sep 4th
Federal education officials say Nebraska will soon receive nearly $59 million that should help protect jobs next school year.
U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan said Friday that Nebraska was one of the first states to submit its application for this money.
The $58.9 million Nebraska is receiving is part of a $26 billion jobs bill and signed into law by President Barack Obama last month.
Republican Gov. Dave Heineman grudgingly agreed to accept the money because it would have been distributed even if Nebraska hadturned it down. Heineman has been a vocal critic of the latest More >
