Low Nebraska Unemployment Means Benefits End Sooner

Unemployed workers in Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota can't qualify for benefits beyond 60 weeks because unemployment rates remain so low.
Payments to workers in those Plains states are ending sooner because the benefits Congress approved deliver more help in areas where unemployment is highest.
Nebraska, South Dakota and North Dakota are the only states withunemployment rates that average below 6 percent, so those states qualify for only two of the four tiers of extended benefits.
State labor officials say they can't do anything to change who is eligible.

Nebraska's very low unemployment rate is an unlucky break for some Nebraskans -- like Jeff Tully.
Tully has been looking for work since he lost his job cutting pipe and aluminum for a Lincoln manufacturing firm almost two years ago.
He used his unemployment benefits -- around $215 a week -- to make truck payments and pay apartment rent. But those payments ran out this spring.
And when he called about the latest federal benefit extension, Tully learned he could not get additional benefits because Nebraska is a Tier 2 state.
